YWCA of Kottayam … A Glimpse into the Past 75 Years

Various social responsibilities were shouldered by YWCA of Kottayam in the course of the past 75 years to serve the needs of society and empowerment of women.

Significant among such activities are:

  • YWCA managed a Center at Puthenangady to provide milk, bread and vitamin supplements to the marginalized and underprivileged section of the community. This was accomplished by partnering with the central government through its programmes for alleviation of poverty.
  • The YWCA took initiative to start a Day Care Center and Baby Crèche and this was a boon to the working women of Kottayam. They functioned as a haven for toddlers by offering them a home away from home during the day time. However, due to its being well established, YWCA withdrew from its administration entrusting it in the hands of a volunteer attached to it.
  • YWCA of Kottayam set up a Community Center at YWCA’s own hall at Manganam about five km to the east of Kottayam town. Smt. Sarah Mathai, Palathinkal provided guidance and leadership in running the same.
  • YWCA made significant mark by raising funds during times of natural disasters and unforeseen calamities to make contributions to provide part of the immediate relief measures to the victims and to rehabilitate them.
  • To serve the multifarious needs of women, the YWCA periodically organized seminars, debates and discussion sessions on socially relevant and sensitive issues, conducted annual tours and picnics, and classes by experts on cooking, handicrafts, healthcare etc. ever since its establishment.
  • YWCA of Kottayam made regular visits every year to orphanages, destitute homes, geriatric care centers, leprosy care units and special schools to extend a caring hand and share their sorrows and all possible help was rendered to the needy. It also organized Medical Camps at local schools.
  • YWCA of Kottayam is very sensitive to the needs of the elderly senior citizen members and conducted regular meetings of Senior Citizens every month infusing great amount of cheer and happiness to them through prayer meetings and fellowships.
  • Since inception, YWCA organized series of Monthly Bible Classes that were well received by the members as evidenced through their commendable attendance. Apart from these, YWCA of Kottayam collaborated with YMCA of Kottayan to organize the annual week of Prayer Meetings, some of which took place in YWCA of Kottayam while others took place in YMCA of Kottayam in general.
  • During summer holidays YWCA of Kottayam organized ‘Summer Camps’. Every such camp attracted a lot of youngsters and provided ample opportunities for their personality development and skill refinement. Resource persons of eminence constituted the faculty.
  • “Thanal” an oasis for women in distress is perhaps the most innovative achievement of Kottayam YWCA. It started from humble beginnings in 1987. It became a refuge and a shelter for women caught up in the merciless talons of destiny. Services of “Thanal” caught wider attention when it assumed the dual responsibility of providing legal aid along with shelter to women and children who had no place to go. Cases that approached ‘Thanal’ include women and children from Kerala and elsewhere who fell victims to various forms of domestic and social injustice and violence. The Forum offers solace and succour to the unfortunate women, girls and children who are driven to desperation through a conspiracy of circumstances that hunt them with little hope of relief. “Thanal” not only rehabilitated women but empowered them to become self-reliant to a great extent.
  • The YWCA choir has carved a niche for itself in Kottayam.
  • Members of Kottayam YWCA are impelled by great sense of social commitment and moral responsibility. The diversity of activities reflect the earnest desire of its members to live up to our motto – “Serve one another in love”. The untiring selfless dedicated work of many eminent women spearheaded the activities of YWCA of Kottayam that helped it to tide over many barriers over the past 75 years and reach the pinnacle of success which is lauded by one and all. It has passed through the hands of 32 illustrious Presidents who along with the Board of Management and the various committees of different times could raise it to a high level of excellence. The result is a saga that is etched in letters of gold for the posterity. The unstinted support of our enthusiastic members keeps this organization marching forward triumphantly. The whole hearted support of the public is yet another source of unceasing inspiration.
  • Looking to the future, YWCA envisages assisting and empowering the underprivileged and marginalized, in the community around. The main focus in this regard will be to bring them to the main stream by breaking their shackles and making them aware of their rights as human beings and citizens of India. Let the beacon of YWCA shine forth gloriously and ever more brightly to enlighten, guide and empower many more lives in our feminine fraternity.
