YWCA of India’s Policy Statement on Development:
Link to YWCA of India
Re-affirmation by YWCA of Kottayam:
The YWCA of Kottayam do re-affirm the Policy Statement on
Development of YWCA of India and the World YWCA and strongly
affirm that the process of development is through the struggle
for justice, further stating our commitment to :
- Understanding development as the empowerment of the community
and individual towards a holistic growth of both
- Making this understanding our common vision and our commitment
as a YWCA Movement.
- Accepting or bringing about changes, attitudinal or otherwise
would lead towards a just social order
- Accepting as a primary responsibility the taking of action
for development led by women, inspired by a Christian philosophy
and guided by an attitude and practices which acknowledge
that development is a fundamental human right for all
- Aiming to secure the dignity of every human being, the
building of a just society and respect for the integrity
of creation
- Challenging oppressive power structures and attempting
to bring about change that transforms society from a hierarchical
and patriarchal model to one of equality and participation,
by breaking down caste/class barriers
- Addressing the urgent economic, social, cultural and
spiritual needs defined by women themselves in their communities
- Adopting people-centered development, enabling women
to be partners in the entire process and ensuring their
full participation in all aspects of development leading
to empowerment, self-determination and self-reliance
- Responding to voices of women who are marginalized, violated
and dehumanized and pledging ourselves to risk taking, and
an advocacy role and every YWCA linking up with women and
movements, empowering each other in the fight for justice
- Sensitizing and revitalizing our membership towards responsible
action by greater involvement of ourselves in the community
projects and programs aimed at a holistic development for
a just social order
- Reviewing, breaking down and restructuring existing hierarchical
power structures, policies and practices within the YWCA
and to move from coexistence to solidarity with the marginalized
- To increasing the sharing of knowledge, technology, time
and funds to attempt to achieve equity both within and outside
the YWCA Movement
- To enrich our Movement’s heritage by realizing
in all our actions the Christian perspective of the YWCA.
Adopted at 24th National Convention 1994.
"In the seasons of migration we see wild
geese in flight. Always we see them fly in a 'V' formation.
Shall we learn from the wild geese? Let us be like them.
Even when we cannot see each other, let us be convinced
that we are moving in that great triangular 'V'. Let that
be our moving YWCA triangle, flying forward, upward. Let
us fly in that “V” formation and be uplifted
by flying together."
