Residential Accommodations
Hostel for Students The Kottayam YWCA was
formed in 1933. The YWCA of Kottayam is rooted in Christian
faith. It endeavours to promote the full development of women
and girls, irrespective of race, culture and creed.
In 1943, Kottayam YWCA established a hostel in a rented building
which was later bought by the YWCA in 1947. This hostel was
launched to meet the requirement of safe housing for adolescent
students moving out of their homes for education. In 1952, Rajkumari
Amrit Kaur, the then Health Minister and the only woman Christian
member of the first cabinet of Independent India, laid the foundation
stone of a hall for members to assemble. This was completed
by 1953. A new Silver Jubilee Hostel building was inaugurated
in 1960 by The Most Rev. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, the Marthoma
Metropolitan. A new hostel building, the foundation stone of
which was laid in 1972 was soon completed and was inaugurated
subsequently by President of National YWCA, Smt. Beril Sreehari.
Then subsequently a Working Women’s Hostel with Grant-in-Aid
from Women and Child Development Department, Ministry of Human
Resource Development was constructed and added to the residential
facilities available at the YWCA of Kottayam. All these hostels
provided safe residential facilities for girls coming to Kottayam
from different places to study. Currently there are 86 students,
60 working women, and 10 kitchen staff. In addition to this,
we have 31 guest rooms also. The YWCA strives hard to give good
services to the inmates like giving food packets to those who
want packed lunches.
